Why Your Peace Matters: Supporting Your Animal's Healing Journey with Steadfast Presence

How caregivers can create a calm, supportive space after an Animal Reiki session.

One of the questions I'm asked most often is: "What should I do after my animal receives Reiki?"

It's a natural question. Because when we love our animals deeply, we want to do everything we can to help them feel better. Yet the answer may surprise you, because the most important support you can offer after an Animal Reiki session isn't another technique, treatment, or intervention.

The most important way you can support your animal beyond Reiki sessions is through the power of your open-hearted, peaceful presence.

That’s why I’ve chosen tortoise as our spirit animal this month. Throughout history, tortoises have been honored as symbols of patience, wisdom, and steadfastness. Carrying their home wherever they go, they remind us that peace is something we can keep with us, no matter what challenges we may face.

As caregivers and Animal Reiki practitioners, we can learn from the wisdom of the tortoise. When life feels uncertain or our animals are struggling, it can be easy to become swept up in worry, fear, grief, or the need to know what comes next. Yet animals are deeply sensitive to our emotional state.

The tortoise reminds us to carry our peaceful centeredness wherever we go. Through our meditation practice, we learn to remain steady amid life's storms, returning again and again through the practice to our center.

Remembering to see things with our “Reiki eyes” can also be helpful. When we look beyond the surface of illness, injury, or difficult circumstances, we can remember the animal's true essence—their beautiful inner light, which remains whole and perfect regardless of what they are experiencing.

From this place, we can reflect peace rather than turbulence. We can embody the understanding that, at the deepest level, All is Well. This understanding creates a beautiful vibration through our whole being that the animal will sense and be drawn to for support.

What Is Our Role as Animal Reiki Practitioners?

People often think of Reiki as something we do for animals. In the Let Animals Lead® method, we practice something different.

I often tell my Animal Reiki students: Be Reiki with your animals, don't do Reiki to them.

Our role is not to fix, direct, or control the animal's healing journey. It is, rather, a shared and co-created experience of healing connections. Our role is to create the conditions where the animal feels safe enough to choose this connection, so that we can walk with them through their journey, supporting them, no matter what they may face.

This means letting go of our expectations, our timelines, and our ideas about what healing should look like. It also means accepting the moment as it is, even when that is difficult or not what we would want. It’s only when we are able to slow down and meet animals exactly where they are, without fear or frustration, that we will radiate the kind of peace that animals need when they are struggling.

In an amazing way, once we shift ourselves into peace, animals sense this and respond, usually quite quickly. And they know how to step into the healing space for exactly what they need. Our meditation practice helps us quiet our minds, center ourselves, and trust their wisdom.

As we release our agenda and simply hold compassionate space, animals can relax deeply into their own healing process.

What the Goats Taught Us About Steadfast Presence

Recently, I was reminded that the most meaningful support we can offer animals often comes not from what we do, but from our willingness to be fully present. Last weekend, I had the joy of teaching a three-day Animal Reiki Sanctuary Immersion at Charlie's Acres Farm Sanctuary here in Sonoma County.

One afternoon, our group entered the goat pasture for a Reiki meditation session. We quietly settled into a circle while the goats continued with their day. Some rested in the sun, some played with one another, and some wandered over to investigate a tour group passing outside the pasture fence.

We didn't call the goats over or try to engage them. We simply sat together and began our meditation. For the first few minutes, the goats mostly observed us from a distance. Then, one or two of the more curious goats slowly approached the circle. They moved from student to student, choosing where they wanted to stand and whether they wanted touch. Some came close and then wandered away again.

As the meditation continued, something beautiful happened.

One by one, more goats began to join us. A few settled beside students. One goat lay down right at the edge of a student's mat. After a while, he stretched his neck out onto the ground and fell into a deep sleep. Another goat lay down nearby and eventually rested his head on the earth as well.

By the end of our hour together, nearly every goat in the pasture had chosen to join the circle. Some rested beside us, some behind us, and some in the center of our group. Some close enough for physical contact, some just out of reach. Many had fallen deeply asleep.

What moved me most was witnessing the natural unfolding of trust.

The goats needed time to explore our energy and understand who we were. They needed space to observe without expectation or pressure. The first few brave goats showed the others that they were safe, and gradually the entire herd relaxed.

This is why I encourage longer Animal Reiki sessions whenever possible, because animals need time. They need time to become curious, to choose connection, and to discover that we aren't asking anything of them.

And we need time, too. Time to quiet our minds, to let go of our worries and expectations and to return to our steady center.

Holding space begins with getting out of our own way. When we do, animals show us exactly what they need and exactly how they want to connect.

The same qualities that supported the goats that morning—patience, presence, and trust—continue to matter after the Reiki session ends.

The Tortoise's Lesson: Returning to Our Steady Center

The tortoise teaches us that true steadfastness comes from within. Its shell is a reminder that we can carry steady presence with us wherever we go. This is especially important to remember when our animals are facing illness, recovery, aging, transitions, or uncertainty.

As highly sensitive people, it's easy to become overwhelmed by worry or sadness. We want answers. We want to know what will happen next. We want to make everything better. But animals feel all of this, and that is why our daily meditation practice matters so much.

Practices such as The Reiki Space Meditation and reflecting on the Reiki Precepts help us return to our center. They strengthen what I sometimes call our "meditation muscles," allowing us to remain grounded even during difficult times. Check out this video explaining how embodying the Reiki Precepts helps us help shelter animals.

Like the tortoise, we can learn to move slowly, breathe deeply, and trust the journey. Turtle wisdom carries many of these same lessons of patience, peace, and steadfastness.

How Animals Integrate Reiki

Every animal responds to Reiki in their own unique way. Some animals may rest deeply after a session. Others may drink more water, seek quiet time, play, become more affectionate, or simply return to their normal routines.

There is no right or wrong response, because healing unfolds differently for every animal. Often, the most supportive thing we can do is observe without analyzing.

So what does steadfast support actually look like after a Reiki session? In most cases, it isn't about doing more. It's about creating the conditions where your animal can continue integrating the experience in their own way and in their own time. A calm environment, respect for their choices, and your own peaceful presence are often the greatest gifts you can offer.

Instead of asking, "Is it working?" we can become curious:

  • What choices is my animal making?

  • What are they asking for right now?

  • How can I honor their preferences?

Animals are always communicating with us. The quieter and more present we become, the easier it is to hear them. It’s very common for animals to show what I call “healing shifts” after Animal Reiki sessions. These shifts are, simply put, changes that we might observe, either in their physical or emotional world. Sometimes the shifts are big, like a cat who has lost his appetite coming forward to eat during or right after an Animal Reiki session.

Other shifts might be very subtle, like an older, arthritic dog walking with more ease and comfort after a session.

How Caregivers Can Offer Steady Support

After an Animal Reiki session, consider offering your animal:

  • Space to rest or move freely

  • Access to fresh water

  • Opportunities for quiet connection

  • Familiar routines and environments

  • Respect for their changing preferences

Most importantly, continue your own practice.

Take a few moments each day to sit quietly, breathe into your hara, and bring yourself back into the peace of this present moment. Because our energy matters.

Animals don't need us (or want us) to carry their burdens or absorb their emotions.

They just need us to continue to show up with an open heart.

When we hold a peaceful space, animals can step into it whenever they choose.

Your Peace Matters

Our animals hold space for us every day. They stay with us through grief, joy, uncertainty, and change. They remind us, again and again, to stay here, now. Animal Reiki gives us the opportunity to offer that same gift in return.

We don't need to have all the answers, or to know what the future holds. We only need to show up with an open heart, trust the animal's wisdom to show us what’s next, and remember that peace is possible—even in difficult moments.

Like the tortoise, we can remain steady. And in that steadfast presence, healing unfolds in its own perfect way.

I’d love to know how your animals have taught you about steadfastness. What have you observed after Animal Reiki sessions?
