How Many Reiki Sessions Do Animals Need? Why the Animal Should Help Decide

When our animals are struggling physically, emotionally, or spiritually, one of the first questions many people ask is: “How many Reiki sessions will my animal need?”

It’s an understandable question, because when we love someone deeply, we naturally want to help them feel better as quickly as possible. Yet over my 28 years of practicing and teaching Animal Reiki, I’ve learned that healing rarely unfolds in a rigid or predictable way.

Reiki, which can be understood as healing through spiritual energy, invites us into a different perspective, one rooted not in pressure or control, but in presence, relationship, trust, and grace. Animals are wonderful teachers of this gentler way of being.

Through Animal Reiki, they often show us that healing is not only about fixing symptoms, but also about rediscovering moments of peace, connection, lightness, and even joy along the journey.

How Many Reiki Sessions Until I See It Working With My Animal?

There is no “one size fits all” in this answer. For some animals, for example, those facing severe stress or perhaps an injury, one session can have a dramatic, positive effect. For others, a visible response may take several sessions, because they need more time to relax into trust and truly open to connection and healing.

For some animals, such as those facing issues of aging or chronic conditions, regular sessions can be tremendously helpful to improving comfort and quality of life. And for many animals, even those not facing illness or injury, regular Reiki sessions not only deepen their bonds with people, but can bring what’s been described to me as a special “Reiki sparkle” to their lives.

Does Animal Reiki Actually Work?

This leads me to the question, “How do I know that Reiki helped my animal?” There are so many ways I’ve seen Reiki support animals. I call them “healing shifts” and I always invite the animal’s humans to not only share and support the healing space as I’m offering Reiki to their animals, but also observe them for these “shifts” over the following 24 hours or so.

This could look like simply spending quiet time observing their animals with an open heart, noticing even the smallest moments of ease, connection, or peace that arise naturally.

These healing shifts are changes (sometimes obvious, sometimes very subtle) that the animals show after their Animal Reiki sessions.

Just a few examples I have seen of this are:

  • An animal who has been restless is able to sleep deeply, or an animal who has not been eating gets his appetite back.

  • An animal who has been constipated (or the opposite) quickly returns to normal digestion.

  • An animal who has been anxious or depressed gets a sparkle of joy back in their eyes or shows a positive change in her mood.

  • An animal who’s been struggling with arthritic pain gets a bounce back in her step.

Sometimes the healing shift looks like an animal at the end of their life being able to finally relax and transition with peace. Sometimes the healing shift is very quiet: softer breathing, deeper relaxation, a calmer presence, or simply a feeling of greater peace shared between the animal and their person.

Although we may see these shifts happening within the Animal Reiki session itself, very often they unfold in the hours after the session, or even the following day. Therefore, I always rely on the animal’s person to stay observant and mindful, taking note of these changes, so we can know how Reiki is supporting their animals’ healing journey.

This encourages the animal’s people to stay connected to presence as they support their animals (something that is often missed in the conventional healing dynamic).

How Do Animals Respond During Reiki, and What Does It Mean?

In the Let Animals Lead® method, we also pay attention to how the animals themselves respond to Reiki sessions. Some animals actively seek out Reiki and ask for more connection.

Others may engage briefly and then walk away, coming back and forth in an ebb and flow manner.

Some animals, due to their past experiences with humans, take time to slowly build trust and choose connections.

Others may say “no” to sessions, and that’s okay too. By honoring their choices and boundaries, we allow the sessions themselves to be guided by the animals rather than by our own human agenda.

But even though I have seen so many miracles of healing through Animal Reiki over the past 28 years, it’s very important as an Animal Reiki practitioner and teacher that I let go of the “prescriptive” perspective of healing when I share space with animals.

And that is always a big challenge because we live in a world where western medicine encourages us to see healing and health as a practice that focuses on symptoms and diagnoses, leading to treatments, followed by the evaluation, “is it cured?”

Many people have come to me over the years, asking for Animal Reiki, only when all conventional treatments have failed. They often have great fear about their animal’s condition, and a feeling of guilt that everything they have already tried hasn’t worked. In truth, many of them are feeling desperate to help their animals, and that’s the only reason they are even willing to give Animal Reiki a try.

It is a great responsibility for me as a practitioner to offer something different to them in those moments, for both animals and their people: comfort, empowerment, and even lightness in their way of seeing this situation.

One of the gifts of Animal Reiki is that it gradually helps us release the burden of believing we must carry everything ourselves. In many ways, this reflects the wisdom of the Reiki Precepts themselves, gently teaching us to release worry and fear, and return again and again to compassion, gratitude, and trust in the present moment.

As we sit quietly with animals in compassionate presence, we remember that healing is not created through force or pressure. It unfolds through relationship, trust, and the grace of a higher power.

Animal Reiki shows us that healing is also not about “curing,” it’s about remembering that wholeness, peace and well-being exist in this moment, we just have to remember this.

Understanding What Reiki Healing Really Looks Like

Life often feels so dark when our animals aren’t feeling well, so seeing the healing shifts and improvements towards well-being that Animal Reiki can create, is truly a glimpse of the divine.

There is a power in the energy of life itself that flows through all of us, and as we support one another in a shared space of peace, the wisdom and love that comes through is truly humbling.

Healing always looks different, it can happen on many levels (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) and sometimes it unfolds in deeply mysterious ways. I remember once as I offered Reiki to a cat as he passed, I felt an incredible rush of joy flow through my being just as he crossed over.

In the midst of all the grief and sadness of that moment, his spirit was free at last and full of joy! Yes, even in that moment, connecting with Reiki helped me remember that All is Well.

I like to think of these small healing shifts, sometimes outward and behavioral, sometimes inward or energetic, and no matter how subtle they are, as moments of divine grace that we are blessed to share.

Perhaps this is one of the deepest gifts animals offer us through Reiki: the reminder that even in difficult seasons, we do not have to carry life so heavily.

Through stillness, connection, and compassionate presence, we begin to rediscover moments of lightness, grace, and quiet joy along the way. This lightness does not mean denying grief, struggle, or uncertainty. Instead, it is the feeling of being spiritually supported within them and remembering All is Well.

Perhaps the real question is not “How many Reiki sessions does my animal need?” but rather, “How can I stay present and open to the healing journey we are sharing together?” Animal Reiki reminds us that healing is not something we force or measure through rigid timelines. It is something we learn to witness with humility, compassion, and trust.

As we honor animals’ choices, observe the healing shifts that unfold, and allow ourselves to soften into the support of spiritual connection, we begin to carry life a little more lightly.

Even in moments of uncertainty, grief, or challenge, Reiki can help us rediscover the quiet grace that exists within all living beings, and the gentle joy that comes from simply being present with love.
