How extraordinary encounters with animals shaped my understanding of Animal Reiki, compassion, and the Let Animals Lead® method.

The Beautiful Ways The Wisdom of Animals Has Shaped Me

In this post, I’m sharing stories of animal experiences that forever changed me. Not just me, but also the way I see the world, the animals in it, and the Let Animals Lead® approach to Animal Reiki.

Kathleen Prasad's dog, Mystic, who helped her discover when she had a tumor

The Puppy Who Helped Save My Life

In 2011, my puppy Mystic was just a few months old when she did something extraordinary that would change my life forever. One day, as I was holding her in my arms, she suddenly began digging at my chest with her little paws. She was surprisingly insistent, and her nails scratched my skin so much that it actually hurt! I quickly put her down and rubbed the sore spot where she'd been digging, and that's when I felt a lump in my breast that I hadn't noticed before.

It turned out to be cancer.

Because of that moment with Mystic, I discovered the tumor in time to have surgery almost immediately and begin the treatment that would save my life. Now, fifteen years later, I am cancer-free, and in a beautiful full-circle moment, I'm developing equine Reiki workshops to support people on their own journeys with cancer.

I've often wondered what Mystic sensed that day, and I firmly believe she could smell something different in my body, something that wasn't right. Perhaps that was why she was so determined to dig at that particular spot, almost as if she were trying to dig the tumor out! Although I can never know exactly what Mystic was experiencing or thinking, I do know what happened, and I will be forever grateful to my little puppy for her extraordinary awareness.

How did Mystic know something was wrong when I didn't even know myself? This is one of the beautiful mysteries of animals that has stayed with me throughout my life, and it's far from the only one.

Joey, the "Sheriff of BrightHaven", taking a break while napping on a lap

Joey, the Little Sheriff Who Understood My Grief

When my beloved soul dog Dakota passed away, I was absolutely devastated and felt as though my world had ended. Dakota had always been beside me when I practiced Reiki at home, and he was so much more than my companion; he was my partner in Animal Reiki and an important part of my spiritual life. His absence left an enormous hole in my heart, and I could hardly imagine how I would move forward without him.

The following weekend, I was scheduled to teach an Animal Reiki class at BrightHaven, a wonderful animal sanctuary where I'd taught for many years. I remember wondering how I could possibly teach when I was feeling so brokenhearted, but I knew I had to go, so I did my best to put on a brave face, smile, and get through the day.

At the time, BrightHaven had a little Chihuahua named Joey who used a wheelchair. Everyone affectionately called him the "Sheriff of BrightHaven" because he was always busy keeping an eye on everything! He would roll himself to the front door to greet visitors, follow us into the living room for Reiki classes, and periodically leave to check on the other animals and staff. He took his responsibilities very seriously, and it was always such a joy to watch him making his rounds.

But that particular day, Joey behaved very differently. Instead of following his usual routine, he wouldn't leave my side, insisting on staying right next to me, leaning against my ankle. Gail Pope, the founder of BrightHaven, brought over his bed, and we took him out of his wheelchair so he could rest comfortably beside me during class.

Later, when we took a break, I walked into the kitchen to get some water, and what happened next surprised everyone. Joey had awakened and, rather than barking to let someone know he wanted help getting into his wheelchair, as he normally would have done, he had dragged himself across the room using his two front legs, determined to follow me. Before I realized what had happened, there he was, right beside me in the kitchen, leaning against my leg.

I was so deeply touched by his determination to stay with me, and in that moment, I felt as though he was saying, Kathleen, I've got you. You're going to be okay. You still have a dog beside you. Look, I'm right here. You're not alone.

Joey had never behaved this way with me before, and I've often wondered how he knew how devastated I was, despite my efforts to appear cheerful. Somehow, he seemed to understand that having a dog beside me was exactly what I needed to get through that day, and he was determined to be that dog. I don't think I even realized that myself until he did it!

I'll never forget his love and devotion, or the way he seemed to recognize something in my grief that no one else could see. It truly seemed that Joey understood more about what I was experiencing than anyone else in the room.

When Two Grieving Hearts Found Each Other

Another extraordinary experience happened during an Animal Reiki class at BrightHaven, when one of the horses at the sanctuary had recently lost his best friend. He had been grieving deeply, staying apart from the herd, withdrawn and listless, and everyone was concerned about how sad he seemed.

That day, one of my students had also recently lost someone she loved, and her grief was so overwhelming that she had almost decided not to attend the class. When I brought the students into the horse pasture to begin our Reiki meditation, something remarkable happened: almost immediately, the grieving horse walked straight toward this particular woman, gently placed his nose against her chest, and remained there.

For the entire session, they stood together, the horse reaching out in connection while the woman stood with him, tears of grief streaming silently down her face.

Neither needed to pretend they weren't grieving, and there was something incredibly moving about watching these two beings, both carrying the pain of loss, finding comfort in one another's presence.

I felt as though they were helping one another heal, and I still wonder about the mystery of that connection. How did the horse recognize something in this particular woman, and what drew him out of his own isolation to reach out to her? Did they somehow recognize their shared grief, even though they were two completely different species?

I don't have answers to these questions, but I witnessed something profoundly beautiful between them, and it reminded me that animals have their own ways of reaching out, offering comfort, and participating in healing relationships. Sometimes their sensitivity and compassion seem to cross boundaries that we humans might imagine separate us.

An Unexpected Hug From a Donkey

Not all of these mysterious experiences have involved grief or illness, and some have simply overwhelmed me with unexpected love!

Years ago, I was teaching at a horse sanctuary in the Southwest, where a group of rescued horses lived alongside a couple of donkeys. At that point, I'd never worked with donkeys before, and I remember feeling a little nervous, wondering what they were like, whether they would enjoy Reiki, and how they might respond. And because they had been rescued from a traumatic past, I wanted to make sure I approached them gently and respectfully, giving them plenty of space to feel comfortable.

Almost immediately after I began the Reiki session, one of the donkeys walked straight up to me, leaned his chest into my body, wrapped himself around my neck, and rested his cheek against mine. He was hugging me! And he stayed that way for the entire session, enveloping me in the most wonderful feeling of affection and connection.

I'd never experienced such an enthusiastic, loving embrace from an animal before, and I haven't experienced anything quite like it since. All my nervousness disappeared, replaced by amazement and joy, and from that moment on, I developed a special love for donkeys and their kindness.

I still laugh when I remember how worried I'd been about what the donkeys might think of our Animal Reiki session, because this particular fellow certainly didn't seem concerned about whether I had any previous experience with his species! He had his own ideas about our Reiki session, and he created an experience far more beautiful than anything I could have planned.

The Little Creature Who Taught Me About Compassion

One of my most unforgettable Animal Reiki teachers was also one of the creatures I'd feared most since childhood.

I was teaching an online Animal Reiki class, and I'd come up with what I thought was a wonderful homework assignment. I wanted my students to practice expanding their compassion by offering Reiki to an insect they were afraid of, with the idea that they could begin seeing with Reiki eyes even those creatures whose appearance or behavior might make them uncomfortable.

After all, it's relatively easy to feel loving compassion for a sweet dog or beautiful horse, but what about the creatures that frighten us? Could we open our hearts to them as well?

At the end of class, I led a meditation inviting the creatures who wished to teach us more about compassion to come forward, and then I sent the students off to do their homework. As I finished the class and happened to look down at my feet, I discovered a giant potato bug, also known as a Jerusalem cricket, lying right beside me!

Oh no! I'd been terrified of these insects since childhood, with their huge heads, strange bodies, and rather alien appearance. I remember thinking, This assignment was supposed to be for my students, not for me!

But as I looked more closely, I noticed that this little creature seemed unwell, perhaps even in pain, and suddenly I felt concerned about him. I sat down on the floor beside him and began offering Reiki, although I have to admit that at first I was still pretty uncomfortable. I felt afraid and a little embarrassed that, after all my years of Animal Reiki practice, I was finding it so difficult to feel compassion for this tiny being.

As I sat with him, however, my feelings began to change, and I found myself becoming more aware of his vulnerability than of my own fear. His body seemed to relax as we shared Reiki together, and eventually, he passed away.

I felt an unexpected tenderness and sadness, along with profound gratitude that I'd been there with him in his final moments. I also felt compassion for myself, recognizing that even after years of spiritual practice, I was still learning how to open my heart more fully, and perhaps this was a lesson I needed just as much as my students did.

And of course, I couldn't help wondering how this little insect had appeared beside me at exactly that moment, immediately after I'd invited such a teacher into our Reiki meditation. How had he found his way to me, and what had brought us together at that particular time?

I'll never know, but I'll never forget him, either. That frightening little creature became one of my most memorable teachers of compassion, reminding me that sometimes our greatest spiritual lessons arrive in forms we would never have chosen for ourselves.

Why These Mysteries Shaped Let Animals Lead®

When I look back at these experiences, I realize that some of the most important lessons I've learned from animals have come through moments I still cannot explain.

A puppy who helped me discover cancer, a little Chihuahua who seemed to know exactly how to comfort my broken heart, a grieving horse who reached out to a grieving woman, an affectionate donkey who surprised me with an unforgettable embrace, and a tiny insect who helped me open my heart beyond my own fear.

Each of these animals revealed something extraordinary about their awareness, sensitivity, compassion, or wisdom, and each changed something within me.

These encounters are an important part of why I created the Let Animals Lead® method of Animal Reiki, because throughout my life with animals, I've witnessed again and again how much they perceive, how deeply they feel, and how beautifully they can connect with us and one another. I've also come to appreciate that animals experience the world in ways that may be very different from our own, and that their sensitivity to energy, their awareness of their surroundings, and their individual preferences deserve our deepest respect.

If animals are capable of such extraordinary awareness and compassion, shouldn't we give them every opportunity to express the fullness of who they are?

This understanding is central to Let Animals Lead®, and it's why our approach to sharing Reiki with animals is different from methods that focus primarily on what the practitioner does. We offer Animal Reiki meditation in ways that honor each animal's individual personality, sensitivities, preferences, and choices, creating space for animals to participate in their own ways and allowing their unique natures to shine.

When we recognize animals as wise and conscious individuals, with their own ways of experiencing and interacting with the world, our relationships with them can become richer and more meaningful. We begin to appreciate that they have as much to offer us as we have to offer them, and that some of the most beautiful Animal Reiki experiences unfold when we make room for their wisdom.

One of the Six Pillars of Let Animals Lead® is Acknowledging Animals as Teachers and Healers in their own right, and for me, this is much more than a beautiful spiritual idea. It's something I've experienced throughout my life, in moments both ordinary and extraordinary, and the more animals have taught me, the more I've come to appreciate the beautiful mysteries of who they are.

Butterfly's Wisdom: The Mystery of Transformation

Our Spirit Animal for November is Butterfly, a beautiful symbol of transformation and mystery, and I've been thinking about how perfectly the butterfly's journey reflects the spiritual lessons animals have brought into my life.

Consider the extraordinary transformation that takes place within a chrysalis, hidden from our ordinary view. Over time, the caterpillar undergoes an astonishing process of change, eventually emerging as a butterfly, a creature so different in appearance and ability from the one that entered the chrysalis.

I wonder whether our own spiritual journeys are sometimes like that, unfolding in mysterious ways that we don't fully recognize as they're happening. We experience something meaningful, perhaps joyful, heartbreaking, frightening, or deeply mysterious, and the experience touches something within us, opening our hearts or changing the way we see the world. Often, it's only years later, when we look back, that we begin to understand how profoundly those moments shaped us.

When I reflect on my encounters with Mystic, Joey, the grieving horse, the donkey, and the Jerusalem cricket, I can see how each became part of my own spiritual transformation. The animals were teaching me about compassion, awareness, love, and connection, and through these experiences, they helped shape the philosophy that would eventually become Let Animals Lead®.

Perhaps the greatest mystery of all is that while we think we are offering Reiki to animals, they are helping us remember the deepest part of our true nature: our interconnection.

What Mysterious Moments Have Animals Shared with You?

As you've been reading these stories, perhaps you've been thinking of some of your own extraordinary memories of experiencing wisdom of animals. Maybe an animal seemed to know you were sad before anyone else noticed, or perhaps a beloved companion responded to something you hadn't yet recognized in yourself. You may have experienced an unexpected connection with a wild creature or had an encounter that changed the way you see animals and the world around you.

I hope you'll take a moment this month to remember an animal who surprised you, touched your heart, or helped you see the world differently. What happened during that mysterious encounter, what did the animal teach you, and how might the experience have become part of your own spiritual journey?

After all these years of sharing Reiki with animals, I've come to realize that some of the most important moments in my life have been the ones I still cannot explain, and that's okay, I embrace it! I don't need to understand every extraordinary connection to appreciate the healing and love it brought into my life.

Mystery is magic. And sometimes, the moments we cannot explain become the ones that teach us and heal us the most.

November Affirmation: I open to the mystery of healing with reverence and wonder.

November Dedication: To butterflies, bees, and pollinators, whose extraordinary lives remind us of the beauty, mystery, and interconnectedness of all beings.
