Remembering Your Soul Power

There are many definitions of the word “Reiki.” Some of the more common ones are:

  1. spiritual energy

  2. life force energy

  3. universal life energy

My Reiki teacher Hyakuten Inamoto explained to me once that the words “Rei” and “Ki” in Japanese both really mean energy. However “Rei” is more the energy of heaven or the divine and “Ki” of physicality and earth, so putting them together, we’re really speaking about the energy of Source, or of all things.

Looking at this meaning, everything in the universe is made up of Reiki, and if we learn to see the world in this way, it is easier to see the sacredness not only of animals, but all beings. Even the water, the trees, the air and sky become sacred things we need to honor and care for. Imagine how much healing action we could bring to this world — how much relieve suffering, purify the water we drink and the air that we breathe — if only more people were able to see the Reiki in all things!

A lesser-used definition of the word Reiki that I’ve come to really appreciate is “Soul Power.” For me, this really speaks to the essence of our being, and the healing power innate in it. It also implies responsibility, for with every action we choose, we create an energetic ripple effect into our world. When we wake up to the healing power of our soul’s presence, we realize that each and every moment we are influencing our world, and we must decide exactly what that influence will be.

As Maya Angelou said, “Each of us has the power and responsibility to become a rainbow in the clouds.” Through our Let Animals Lead® practice, we’re able to remember this great soul power and responsibility within us and cultivate and strengthen balance, grounding, peace and positivity for the betterment of our world.
