Wednesday, March 1, was National Pig Day—and whenever I think of pigs, I cannot help but remember Harley, an amazing pig who touched my heart and the hearts of many lucky enough to know him.
Harley was a beautiful, 800-pound black-and-white pig who lived many happy years at BrightHaven sanctuary in Northern California. Five years ago, on July 11, he passed away—and is still sorely missed by me, so many of my students, and everyone who knew him. He was such an amazing soul that I feel the need to write about his life for those of you who didn’t get the opportunity to meet him in person.
Have animals healed your life? Have animals inspired you to be a better person? If you love animals and want to make the world a more compassionate place for them, then please join us in celebrating World Animal Reiki Day tomorrow, February 5, 2017!
Last year, during our inaugural celebration, we had hundreds of animal lovers around the world take time out of their day to honor animals as spiritual teachers and healers. Whether you participate by simply lighting a candle and remembering a beloved animal, volunteering in your local shelter, or leading a Reiki event at your local animal organization, we hope even more of you join us this year!
Horses have always been the great loves of my life. Even as a small child, I could feel the healing power of just being in their majestic presence. It was so wonderful as an adult to realize that I could give back to them through the healing power of Reiki!
In honor of horses and all the wisdom and compassion that they bring to the world, I have written my latest book, Heart to Heart With Horses: The Equine Lover’s Guide to Reiki. It includes a foreword by world-renowned holistic veterinarian Allen Schoen and is written from my heart to yours. Through real-life stories, inspiring case studies and simple Reiki meditative exercises, this book illuminates powerful ways that compassionate presence can heal.
Here’s a wild fellow in a tuxedo truly worth celebrating this Friday: the penguin! January 20 is Penguin Awareness Day, and I plan on doing what I can to honor, protect and spread awareness about how we can help these sweet little seabirds.
They need our help. Penguins worldwide—from Antarctica, Argentina, Australia and Chile to New Zealand, South Africa and the Galapagos Islands—are facing some serious threats, including:
I don’t really do New Year’s resolutions—but a new year does always feel like a fresh start in some ways and an opportunity to check in with my big-picture goals: What do I want to achieve this year? Is there anything in my life I want to do differently? Am I as happy as I can be?
For me, happiness is intrinsically connected to living with purpose and meaning. I work with animals every single day because that adds value to my life. My dog, horses and even the shelter and sanctuary animals I encounter remind me the importance of kindness, of mindfulness, of compassion. And of the goodness in this world (which sometimes feels very hard to find). So with the animals as my guide, here are my five goals for a happier 2017:
