I gave up buying leather shoes a few years ago and never looked back. Vegan shoes get a bad rap, so at first I thought there would be slim pickings when it came to stylish, cruelty-free footwear. Boy was I wrong: I’ve found so many wonderful, comfortable (and popular!) options from innovative companies and designers entering the animal-friendly fray. Even celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Alicia Silverstone and Natalie Portman have been known to flaunt their ethical footwear.
I discovered my favorite pair of vegan boots by Madden Girl tucked inside a cute boutique in New York City called MooShoes. I absolutely love wearing them! But if you’re always on the lookout for vegan shoes like me, these other companies are worth a look, too:
I love wearing makeup on special occasions, but on a daily basis I tend to keep it simple. So while I might not wear foundation every single day, I won’t leave the house without making sure my lips are moisturized.
Recently I stumbled across None of Your Beeswax lip balm from LUSH cosmetics, and it’s just lovely. It’s a mellow citrus wax with hints of lemon, mandarin and vanilla. In case you were wondering, yes, it smells (and tastes) amazing!
When I’m working, I’m usually up to my eyeballs in dog, cat and horse hair. I like to dress up as much as the next girl, but day in and day out, being comfortable is important to me.
I find myself reaching again and again for the same comfy pieces when working with animals. The following has truly become my animal Reiki uniform. If you’ve taken one of my classes, yep, you’ve seen me wear the following:
- SARA T-shirt: I “paw” Reiki is my favorite, but I wear them all!
Happy Halloween! Thank you for sharing my blog’s first week with me. As this week winds down, here are a few things I’m feeling gratitude for today. …
1. Businesses helping animals: Friends, did you see this? TOMS Shoes recently launched an adorable line of shoes to help endangered gorillas in Africa. I really like the white ones! (Too bad I didn’t discover these until summer had already ended.)
2. The bird bath my daughter Indigo and I add water to each day in our back yard. We love to watch the robins and blue jays fluffing out their feathers so sweet in the water.
I never, ever thought I’d get a tattoo. Not that I had anything against tattoos, but in my world, having a tattoo never even crossed my mind. Maybe because I was kind of a nerd in school. My best friend was a dog. I played on the badminton team in high school (go Saints!). I got straight As and went to a top-tier university. I worked and got married and had a kid.
In 2011, I received the shocking diagnosis that I had breast cancer. Everything started happening so fast. The pills, the doctor visits, the bloodwork, the tests, the surgery. The scars.
