September 2006
Welcome!
Animal Reiki Greetings as we enter the beautiful season of Fall. I hope this newsletter finds you healthy and surrounded by lots of fuzzy companions.
Thank you to all of you who have written in support of the book. I am so glad it has been helpful to so many. A few bits of news: I am excited to share that, thanks to one of my veterinarian Reiki students, Reiki is a featured modality in the latest issue of the Professional Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. I hope that this inclusion will spread the word and Reiki to more animals everywhere! I am also very excited to have one of my beloved shelter clients, Lali, featured in the September issue of Dog Fancy Magazine. Yes, her story has a very happy ending! Also, there are a few updates to my website: be sure to see the quick links at the bottom of this page for more information about the new practitioner directory, the updated press page and Animal Reiki Talk, and a special tribute in loving memory of my beloved Godiva.
We have another jam-packed newsletter. The first 2 articles are by Veterinarians. I hope that they inspire you to reach out to the holistic vets in your area and make Reiki connections. We also have 3 wonderful animal articles by talented practitioners about treating a rabbit, dog and horses. Also, from one of my fantastic Australian students, a lovely tribute to Steve Irwin. And finally, I review and recommend Frans and Bronwen Stiene's latest: a wonderful self-healing Reiki card deck.
Once again, I'd like to thank all the wonderful contributors to this issue. Your work and dedication inspire all of us!
Please visit the Share Your Stories section below to find out about contributing to a future newsletter. Your experiences with animals and Reiki will help and inspire others!
Finally, please think about deepening your connection to the Animal Reiki Source Community by furthering your education through the many class offerings, joining our monthly Animal Reiki Talk, or joining our all new "Animal Reiki Source" yahoo group for help and healing of our animal friends.
With Love and Reiki Blessings,
Kathleen
Brazilian Veterinarian Applies Reiki
My name is Carolina C. Kliass, I’m from São Paulo, Brazil, and I had the pleasure of meeting Kathleen two years ago San Rafael, CA. I’m a veterinarian and Reiki therapist (Reiki level III and Karuna Ki Tera-Mai level II); I’ve worked with Reiki for seven years and for the past four years I’ve been applying Reiki on animals.
Goals of a Holistic Veterinarian
Q. Dear Dr. Shawn:”What are your goals as a holistic veterinarian when treating your patients?”
A: ”Each doctor has specific goals for his or her practice. When I simply practiced conventional medicine, my goal was to treat disease and bring comfort to my patients. Now, as an integrative, holistic doctor, my goals have changed. Here are 5 goals that I have for my patients.
Aimee the Rabbit
As a Registered Nurse in a small Nursing Home I have always looked for different ways to help my patients. There is always a wide variety of conditions to manage. And no matter how hard you try there are always limitations to medications and life in an institution. I learned about Reiki through a fellow nurse. Three of us got together to learn Level 1. We then spent the next few months looking at ways to incorporate this modality into our practice. During this time and while obtaining my Level 2, I began to wonder why I couldn't apply this knowledge and skill to family pets. Everyone I asked thought it was a great idea but nobody I asked here in Toronto seemed to be venturing into that direction.
Reiki Worms My Heart
Late one evening I received an emergency call from a woman named Bonnie who needed help for her beloved German Shepard, James. Several months earlier, James had been diagnosed with heartworms. The vet took the standard measures, but unfortunately, the condition progressed into Advanced Heartworm Disease. This beautiful, once healthy and athletic dog had become very sick and weak and spent much of his time in what must have been excruciating pain. The vet gave James a grim prognosis.
A Day in the Hay
On a gorgeous and sunny Sunday afternoon recently, there was a meeting. A meeting of hearts and minds, seeking to come together and learn from each other, and learn from the animals. I drove up the gravel road to the barn to meet with a small group of members from one of the Animal Reiki class sequences here outside of Chicago. In previous classes over the past two years, we had only worked in person with canine participants during Level 1 of the course, and I had not ventured into taking students to a barn to work directly with horses. However this time, for students in the course interested in learning more about horses, we were being warmly hosted at the barn by Hope, a fellow Reiki Master Teacher, along with several horses at the barn including Dakota, Lady, Frosty, Country Swinger, and Snoopy.
A Great Loss
The energies here on the Sunshine Coast are very heavy this Tuesday morning as the enormity of Steve Irwin’s death settles within the animal world. It feels like a great weight has descended just a few feet above my head. The zoo is about 10 kilometers from where I live and the energy comes in waves. The collective consciousness of both humans and animals are creating this energy as everyone comes to terms with this life- changing event.
5 Stars Review
I have just received this beautiful card deck, and as I open the box, I am immediately drawn in by the lovely colors and artwork on the backs of the cards. Definitely Asian-inspired style, thus perfect for a "Reiki card deck," and definitely minimalist lines, which is also so very Japanese. In the introduction booklet, included with this card deck, Frans and Bronwen write, "Each being on this planet has the ability to initiate self-healing--it is your birthright. The techniques in this deck offer each one of you the opportunity to consciously tap into your healing ability, supporting you on your natural path."
